Constraints to Stop Deforestation
نویسندگان
چکیده
Wadler's deforestation algorithm eliminates intermediate data structures from functional programs. To be suitable for inclusion in a compiler, deforestation must terminate on all programs. Several techniques exist to ensure termination of deforestation on all rst-order programs, but general techniques for higher-order programs were introduced only recently by rst Hamilton and then Marlow. We present a new technique for ensuring termination of deforestation on all higher-order programs that allows useful transformation steps prohibited in Hamilton's and Marlow's techniques. The technique uses a constraint-based higher-order control-ow analysis. We also relate our technique to previous approaches to termination of rst-and higher-order deforestation in some detail.

Deforestation for higher-order functional programs
Functional programming languages are an ideal medium for program optimisations based on source-to-source transformation techniques. Referential transparency affords opportunities for a wide range of correctness-preserving transformations leading to potent optimisation strategies. This thesis builds on deforestation, a program transformation technique due to Wadler that removes intermediate data...
متن کاملNear real - time deforestation detection for enforcement of forest reserves in Mato Grosso
We have developed a near-real time deforestation monitoring system, named SAD (Sistema de Alerta de Desmatamento) to monitor the Brazilian Amazon states. Here, we present how SAD works and has been used to monitor deforestation in different types of forest reserves in the State of Mato Grosso, and the potential use of this information to stop illegal deforestation in these reserves. The types o...
متن کاملThe potential of deforestation-free agreements to decrease deforestation and promote sustainable supply chains: The case of the Soy Moratorium in Brazil
Deforestation trends in the Brazilian Amazon have been increasingly linked to globalized markets for beef, timber, soybean, and other commodities. In recent years there has been a remarkable proliferation of deforestation-free agreements to pressure corporations to adopt more environmentally responsible practices around the world. The Brazilian Soy Moratorium (SoyM), the first voluntary defores...
متن کاملGovernance, Location and Avoided Deforestation from Protected Areas: Greater Restrictions Can Have Lower Impact, Due to Differences in Location
— For Acre, in the Brazilian Amazon, we find that protection types with differences in governance, including different constraints on local economic development, also differ in their locations. Taking this into account, we estimate the deforestation impacts of these protection types that feature different levels of restrictions. To avoid bias, we compare these protected locations with unprotect...
متن کاملThe Challenge of Deforestation in Tropical Africa: Reflections on Its Principal Causes, Consequences and Solutions
Economic development is dependant on factors including capital, labour force and natural resources. Forests are natural resources which, if properly managed, can provide habitats for animal and plant species, pasture for livestock, wood for shelter, timber and fuelwood, land for agriculture and can have a favourable eect on weather and climatic patterns. Nevertheless, deforestation has been a ...
